The Flaming Lips are an awesome band that have built their legacy on more than just some of the best albums of the last 20+ years; they’ve also reached greatness by continually pleasing their fans with surprising ideas. From the four-discs-played-simultaneously experiment of Zaireeka to their arena tour with Candlebox, from walking across crowds in giant bubbles to their multi-hour epics over the last couple years, The Flaming Lips are always trying new things. Latest example: The Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots musical, making its premiere in November at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, CA. In honor of their eccentricities, let’s try this news story in a different way. I’ll list a couple facts below and you guess which one is false:
1. The musical is about Yoshimi, a young Japanese artist facing the battle of her life: the battle for her life, where Yoshimi journeys alone into a fantastical robot-world and wages a war with fate.
2. It features music from several Flaming Lips albums like Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, The Soft Bulletin, and At War with the Mystics.
3. The musical receives its stage pedigree with story and direction by multiple Tony Award-winning director Des McAnuff.
4. As a requisite to ticket purchase, all viewers must consume LSD, which will be handed out by ushers upon entering the theatre.
So, which one is false? I guess you’ll have to see the show and find out.
