Joanne Pollock premieres "Expect Me" video, shares track-by-track breakdown of debut album Stranger

After teasing us with random tracks and the Optimist EP, then edging us closer to controlled arousal with Poemss (her collaboration with TMT favorite Aaron “Venetian Snares” Funk), Joanne Pollock finally got us off good and proper last week when she released her debut solo album, Stranger.

Chief Keef Thot Breaker

[Glo Gang; 2017]

Rating: 4.5/5

Styles: mansion music, sosa&b
Others: Sosa, Otto, Young Chop, Lil Durk, SD

Fuckers in school don’t say much about Chief Keef these days. It’s hard to predict when Keef will re-surface; his brushes with traditional stardom have been not quite “accidental,” but certainly incidental to his creative process. The music’s better for it, and Sosa gets to enjoy life as rap’s last true underground superstar. He’s the ultimate YouTube play-count paradox, the owner of numerous 50+ million view videos for songs that have never sniffed radio play.

He's not the bluesman we deserve, but he's the one we need right now.

Far be it from me to complain about the uncomplainable (no, I’m not talking about meth), but when did bombardment-by-abhorrent-cover-version become standard practice in supermarkets? Nickelback doing Queen, Nickelback doing Metallica, Nickelback doing Nickelback…it’s enough to make one pine for the freewheeling harum-scarum days when Muzak ruled the grocery aisles with breezy renditions of “Ebony and Ivory” and “Joy to the World.”

Laurel Halo Dust

[Hyperdub; 2017]

Styles: virtual, actual, groove, light, play
Others: Laurel Halo, Arthur Russell, Julia Holter, Kathy Acker, Maya Deren

“My sound is probably a matter of simultaneously having that no-mind mentality, that floating in the ether quality, while still having an amount of soul and a certain amount of emotion — without venturing too far into either territory. That region between virtual and actual.”
– Laurel Halo, interview with The Quietus, 2011

“There’s a lot of weight to the word “dust,” in terms of a process of change, or a process of becoming, or a process of resolution.”

Xiu Xiu announce even more North American tour dates, decreasing our likelihood of ever forgetting them

(Good luck remembering how to correctly pronounce their band name in public conversation, though!)

Even though the Jamie Stewart-led project has been around more or less consistently for roughly 15 years now, these last couple of years have felt like a Xiu Xiu renaissance; and I personally look forward to watching the general public become increasingly squeamish as Xiu Xiu (both musically and as people) reach an unprecedented peak of international prominence.

Both as a solo artist and as the rhythmic imagineer powering such distinctive ensembles as Liturgy, EX EYE, Guardian Alien, Zs, and more, New York-based, “post-Free Jazz” percussionist Greg Fox is all-too-familiar with the concept of music as “gradual progression.” So it’s only fitting that his just-announced second proper solo album for

Chihei Hatakeyama Mirage

[Room40; 2017]

Styles: clouds, buildings, bodies of water
Others: Tim Hecker, Abzû, Lawrence English

There’s not much to say about Chihei Hatakeyama’s newest album, Mirage. After all, what is there to say about the way a column of water spirals about beneath the surface of the ocean, or the way a street alley reflects the translucent sounds of traffic at night? With his latest release, Hatakeyama set out to document the nature of feeling as it is affected by space, an attempt to replicate the experience of being somewhere as told through sound.

Because today is literally the first day of summer, California dreamer Ariel Pink has just decided to announce his eleventh studio album, entitled Dedicated to Bobby Jameson. It’ll be released on September 15 on Mexican Summer, and you can pre-order it now. Not coincidentally, the album is inspired by…Bobby Jameson: an L.A. musician who was presumed dead until 2007, when he suddenly resurfaced after 35 reclusive years to “pen” his autobiography — in the form of blogs and YouTube videos.
