Talibam! to return this September with two new LPs at once; until then, I continue a trickle of personal information
Major league BUTT-KICKING is (almost) back in town.

I’ve written some news about Talibam! once before, and at the end of the article, I revealed a secret or something like a “personal secret.” (Come to think of it: I guess since us TMT news-boys are just about fully anonymous, any bit of personal information stands as a secret.) Anyway, I revealed to you all that I went to the same high-school as Kevin Shea — the Talibam! member with the strongest jawline.

Bill Orcutt Bill Orcutt

[Palilalia; 2017]

Styles: guitar, traditional, improvisatory, standards, curation
Others: Marisa Anderson, Loren Connors, John Fahey,

It has become increasingly difficult to consider Bill Orcutt’s playing beyond the (self-)problematized framing and paratextual acrobatics within which it is embedded. Orcutt delivers his performances with provocation (his 2015 release Colonial Donuts featured something like a Google Image array of Bob Marley tattoos etched into white skin).

“There are particular sounds that interest me because they have been cut in certain fashion, because they have a certain roughness, because perhaps there are these stories that have not been entirely excised.”

It’s 2017, which means we’ve had a few years to recover from the brutal chaos of what historians will eventually call the “OFWGKTA epoch.” And yet…Tyler, the Creator’s brand is stronger than ever, still capable of uniting the disparate media spaces of music, television, fashion, gratuitous profanity, and sardonic stream-of-consciousness Twitter banter under a single, highly-advanced artistic vision.

White Suns Psychic Drift

[The Flenser; 2017]

Styles: noise, not rock
Others: The Body, Graham Lambkin, Kreng

It’s a weird Wisconsin summer, and I’m treading lightly under its irresolute gaze, chomping on my bottom lip as I wade through a tide of undefined gradients, oily Men ‘O War, expressionist shards, crooked tessellations, callow cries for justice. My enthusiasm for coaxing inspiration out of prepubescent Picassos is heliotropic; it’s my spine that’s sagging, anticipating this heavy season’s violent gravity. It should be hotter. My knees should be screaming. These exploding tangles of matter, universes trapped in 90-pound bundles, should be knocking me off my feet.

How does shoegaze survive in the modern era?

“Hey, don’t forget to pay the rent this month…And did you send that email about that thing yet??? Oh, and your kid and his dweeby friend need a ride home from lacrosse at 3:30; better make a note! Almost forgot: did you forget to wash your underwear AGAIN?! Better NOT FORGET to swing by the Target and buy some more…”

♫♪  Swarvy - “Circles”

From Leaving to Stones Throw to Street Corner, Swarvy been slanging beats as a household name for a minute. So don’t be taken aback when Paxico Records drops their debut vinyl album, Bop by Swarvy this August 11 (also via digital download) — [although, the re-release of 1991 by Ahwlee is still available].
