Anxiety is inescapable. We live in a time when it is so deeply woven into the fabric of our society, so crucial to the operation of our grand social-industrial machine, that even the concept of peace or contentment can only ever exist as a corollary to the queasy, constant sense of unrest we all feel today.

“[The] elements which participate in the naming of the genre say nothing about the musical features, but maybe say everything about the pragmatics of the music.”
– Gabriele Marino

“Shit gettin’ too specific / 10 black whips, I’m too consistent.”

The Necks Unfold

[Ideologic Organ; 2017]

Styles: free improv
Others: The Necks

Unfold, Australian trio The Necks’ 19th release, is a challenging but eerily beautiful free-improv record doubling up as a critique of the album-form. Each of the four pieces — among the shortest the band have ever released — is the length of a side of vinyl, maintaining a constant state of tension without exploding into noise or virtuoso soloing. Since none of the tracks are given numbers, the album allows you to develop your own listening strategy.

Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy announces Merle Haggard covers album, shares 360° VR video

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy announces Merle Haggard covers album, shares 360° VR video
This really happened

On May 5, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy will be releasing a new album titled Best Troubador, which consists entirely of Merle Haggard covers. It makes sense, considering Billy’s folky roots and his veneration of the country master, with whose music he has had an intimate relationship for over 25 years, so much so that his first public performance was a Haggard cover.

The covers included on Best Troubador are personal favorites of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and will span Haggard’s entire career, stretching from his third album (1967) to his forty-seventh (2011).

I‘m not sure when I first heard the music of William Basinski. I’m guessing it’s well over 15 years ago, but I honestly don’t remember. It’s a fitting confession to make for music that, to me at least, feels so absolutely free of time. William’s music floats not just in time, but between time, finding its way into and through our lives in ways that so much music does not. It exists across us, and within us, recurring at times and places we least expect it. That is indeed the beauty of his music.

PC Worship Buried Wish

[Northern Spy; 2017]

Styles: dissonance, open fourths, musique concrète, maybe rock,
Others: Parquet Courts, Pile, 50 y/o Kurt Cobain, Naomi Punk, like uh The Velvet Underground, and ummm Swans I guess?

Los Angeles is getting warm again. With small foreshadowing glimpses of Southern California’s spring-summer continuum wafting in, a certain sweaty, raw sound feels in vogue, if only for a beat or two. New York avant-rock band PC Worship enter with the sticky, drowsy, detached Buried Wish. It’s hot and careless, and it runs on diesel. Motivation drips off of Buried Wish like the strength to run in a dream: you keep falling to and through the ground, maybe your teeth are falling out too, I dunno.

The current crop of New Age and ambient projects emerging from the Bandcamp ether are mostly background noise, filler music for empty workdays or zone-out sessions at home. Tripp, ephemeral, forgettable…
