Thundercat Drunk

[Brainfeeder; 2017]

Rating: 3/5

Styles: funk, soul, experimental pop, electro, smooth jazz
Others: Stereolab, Tim Heidecker, Ariel Pink, Max Tundra, Money Mark, Dam Funk, Ween

Stephen Bruner (a.k.a. Thundercat) favors the same reflective, jazzy chord progressions from album to album, track to track. It’s such a resolutely rote approach as to discourage the critical reflex to cite this tendency as a caveat. It’s his endless song, and it hasn’t stopped feeling good for him.

Wolf Eyes announce tour in support of upcoming album Undertow, launch Bleep store

Time to own up: there’s some seriously big Wolf Eyes-related news we somehow forgot to report on when it transpired a few weeks ago. Oops. But hey, what better occasion than the announcement of a major inter-continental tour to make that up! So here it is: the Michigan noise veterans are coming out with a new album, titled Undertow, on March 24. The LP will be released via Lower Floor Music, a new imprint the band has launched specifically for the occasion.

♫♪  Arca - “Anoche”

After revealing a new self-titled album and its first single just two days ago, Arca returns today with a video for another new album cut, “Anoche.” The track one again features Arca’s beautiful voice, and the video — conceived by Jesse Kanda and Alejandro Ghersi — is a stunner, with Arca sensually dancing around dead bodies.

Faith, Torn Apart: A Parallel Poem

My room is a mess [I prefer “lived in”]
My hair is black and blue [I will be gray by 26]
My new phone is pink [My mantra: “Real men do not exist”]
My dress is a fishnet dress [I am not your catch]
My face looks soft [I have never been able to grow a beard]
My eye shadow is like Cleopatra [What good is a jewel that ain’t still precious?]

To participate in the life of playing creative music is to participate in what is, ideally, a very long course of study and refinement. While a collective music in most instances, the art often results in extended periods of solitary work, whether communing with an instrument’s truest sound and innate possibilities, or tracing the structure of an arc that will be buoyed by individual players. Pianist Matthew Shipp, born in Wilmington on December 7, 1960, is no stranger to solitude despite decades of collaboration.

Sweden may’ve made up for our boor-in-chief’s latest asinine grasp at legitimacy with a little chaos Monday night, but as long as I’ve been aware (think I started with Bergman in 2007 and moved on from there), its chief feature has been one of dreadful stillness.

Mega Bog Happy Together

[Nicey; 2017]

Styles: wayfarers, faux pearl choker, leather, oil, Nat Shermans
Others: David Lynch, Julia Holter, Stereolab, Jerry Paper, Scott Walker

On “Fwee,” the semi-sardonic miniature of diminished frolic-in-the-flowers psychedelia that closes Happy Together, Mega Bog leader Erin Birgy reminds the listener of a certain kind of freedom: “You’re free to bruise and you do.” This truism is as much of a theme as allowed by Happy Together, a dizzying album full of hooks and character but never enough space to get footing. This sits at its core and works to its advantage.

Others: Justin Timberlake, Vampire Weekend, 808s & Heartbreak

David Longstreth’s recent comments on Instagram regarding the decay of the concept of indie rock are as valid a critique that I’ve yet read on the past decade-plus of Western music culture.
